Local Church Plans Video Game Tournament for Kids
Pastor Mario Pikmin of Our Lady of Perpetual Motion Church in Point Pleasant doesn't know much about video games, but he knows that the children in his congregation love them. "Sometimes I see the kids at mass trying to use their ataris or gameboys or whatever, hoping their parents don't notice. I don't really get mad, though. I understand mass can be a little bit boring for a child," Pastor Pikmin says with a laugh.
The Pastor realized that maybe through video games he could help the children in his congregation feel more a part of the church. "I've been Pastor here for nearly 50 years, so I know something about kids. Years ago it was baseball cards or comic books that they loved. These days it's all these gizmos. I think if the kids realize I'm hep to their interests, the kids will feel more comfortable in church," Pastor Pikmin said. With this in mind, the Pastor decided to hold a video game tournament.
"I asked one of the children what was her favorite video game and she told me Animal Crossing. I asked her why and she said because the animals were so cute and all her friends played it. I thought, that's perfect! I decided right then we should hold an Animal Crossing tournament," said the Pastor.
The tournament will be held on Saturday, August 22 at 10am in the parish meeting room. "We'll have prizes like gift cards and trophies for the best Animal Crossers. The child who is the overall winner of the Crossings will get a special surprise. It's sure to be great fun!" said Pastor Pikmin.
There will also be snacks and treats for everyone to enjoy during the tournament. Pastor Pikmin says the day promises to be great fun for families and believes it will bring the whole community closer.
Update: Pastor Pikmin informed us that the Animal Crossing Tournament has been postponed indefinitely. The Pastor was just informed that Animal Crossing is a noncompetitive game involving playful animals in imaginary villages, and therefore not suited for a tournament. Pastor Pikmin said he is considering a GTA tournament on the recommendation of a teen in his congregation.
I really hope they can also get the help of Samus Megaman as a judge for one of these tournaments once they figure out what type of tournament they wish to run
