Local Bigfoot Expert Completes Yeti Documentary

Dr. Magnus Piede of Brielle is considered one of the world's top experts on Bigfoot. He has devoted his career to studying the elusive creature throughout North America. He has written three bestselling books about Bigfoots. He has produced and hosted two documentary specials on the Discovery Channel focusing on his Bigfoot research. He travels the world lecturing and educating people about Bigfoots. Yet, in the 20 plus years he has been studying Bigfoots, he has never seen one. Recently the Bay Head Beacon was able to catch up with Dr. Piede at his home in Brielle to discuss his career and new documentary.

BHB: Does it bother you, Dr. Piede, that you have never seen a Bigfoot in all the years you have been studying them?

Dr. Piede: I'd say it's more of a disappointment. I'm always examining evidence and chasing down leads, but mostly I have to work with blurry photographs and plaster castings of big footprints. But in some ways that makes me more passionate about my quest to find Bigfoots.

BHB: You said Bigfoots. Did you mean Bigfeet?

Dr. Piede: Well, my son would answer that with a joke he made up. Why are Sasquatches called Bigfoot?

BHB: Why?

Dr. Piede: Because they have one foot bigger than the other. (Piede laughs) Seriously, though, that's a common misconception about the plural of Bigfoot. The truth is that more than one Bigfoot is Bigfoots, as in "those Bigfoots have big feet."

BHB: I see. So what do you say to skeptics who don't believe Bigfoots exist and that you are wasting your time?

Dr. Piede: I say to them, look at all the evidence before you decide. Stories of the Sasquatch go back hundreds of years in Native American cultures. There are countless, albeit blurry pictures of Bigfoots. People have found tracks, footprints, and traces of fur amongst other things. For me, seeing the smoke is enough to believe there is a fire.

BHB. But why no captured Bigfoots?

Dr. Piede: That is a question we don't have an answer for quite yet. My theory is that Bigfoots have a natural camouflage that goes beyond their appearance. I think it may be some sort of pheromone that confuses the minds of any observer. It causes them to not see the Bigfoots even when they are right nearby. It is also why most pictures of Sasquatch are taken from a great distance where the pheromone would have no effect. I discuss this at length in my second book, "Smell My Feet: The Bigfoot Pheromone Phenomena." And this is not without precedent in nature. There are creatures such as the giant geometer moth caterpillars that emit a smell exactly like the plants they eat. Ants will ignore them completely thinking they are part of the plant.

BHB: So tell me about your latest documentary. It diverges from your usual work. Isn't that correct?

Dr. Piede: Yes it's different, but it still is in the same general field. I took some time to study the Yeti of the Himalayas, also known as the Abominable Snowman. You might be aware that the Yeti is considered to be closely related to the Bigfoot of North America.

BHB: And like Bigfoot, many people don't believe Yetis exist.

Dr. Piede: That's true, and that was one of my main goals in doing the documentary. It's called "Return of the Yeti." The name indicates the increased number of sightings in recent years..

BHB: And did you prove the Yeti's existence?

Dr. Piede: Well, you'll have to see the documentary to get that answer, but I will tell you I found some fascinating evidence.  I spent almost four months in Tibet speaking to witnesses, examining artifacts and images, and exploring the Himalayas. It was amazing! Viewers will have to watch for themselves to decide, but I came away from the experience believing that Yetis are just as real as Bigfoots.

BHB: Did you get to see a Yeti, yourself?

Dr. Piede: (Laughs) Unfortunately, I didn't. I believe it may be possible that the Yeti have the same pheromones that the Bigfoots have. I may have been sitting right next to a Yeti and never have known it. But there is so much other evidence that I am convinced regardless.

BHB: When can we expect to see your documentary?

Dr. Piede: "Return of the Yeti" will start airing on the Discovery Channel the first week in December. It will coincide with the release of my book of the same name. The book makes a wonderful Christmas present for anyone who is a Bigfoot aficionado. I will also be speaking and signing books at some area Bigfoot conventions in the coming months.

BHB: It sounds like you're going to be pretty busy. Anything else you have going on?

Dr. Piede: Oh yes. I'm working on a children's book of Bigfoot jokes with my 10 year old son Max. I't should be a lot of fun. Let's see if I can remember a couple... ok, what do you call a Sasquatch that smells like bacon?

BHB: Uh...I don't know.

Dr. Piede: Pigfoot! (Piede laughs). How do Bigfoots keep their communities safe?

BHB: No idea.

Dr. Piede: With a Neighborhood Sasquatch! (laughs) Get it?
