60 Foot High Slide to be Built in Bay Head Playground

When the Centennial Park playground re-opens this spring, there's going to be a BIG surprise. The little park in Bay Head will be home to the highest playground slide in New Jersey. "It's going to be amazing!" said Recreation Department spokesperson Joy Spielplatz. "The slide will be 60 feet high! The tallest playground slide in the state and maybe even in the country." When the Recreation Department realized they had some money left in the budget, they wanted to find an interesting way to use it. They got the idea for the epic slide when they started doing some online searches for unusual playground equipment.

"The slide we are getting is almost identical to one that already exists in New Zealand, although ours will be quite a bit taller," said Spielplatz. "There will be a 60 foot central tower with two tube slides coming down. When kids go down the slide, they can achieve speeds of up to 25 miles per hour. It should be really exciting!"

Not everyone is as enthusiastic as Spielplatz. Some believe that the slide might be dangerous. "I bring my kids to that park all the time," said Triste Parco of Bay Head. "I think it was fine the way it was. Now I'm going to have to worry about my kids shooting out of a tube at 25 miles an hour! That's nuts! And even if it's not my kids using it, there's going to be tons of  toddlers flying out of those tubes like bullets. Sounds like a big liability to me."

Spielplatz said that they carefully considered the liability issues with the slide. "We understand there are concerns out there, but we came up with a solution. Our attorneys said there is something called 'Implied Consent.' What that means is that if we put up enough warning signs with really big lettering warning people of the potential dangers to a 60 foot slide, it becomes their responsibility if they allow their kids to use it. So there really is no reason to worry. No matter how many kids get hurt, it won't be our responsibility."

Slide construction should begin in late February, weather permitting, and should take about two or three weeks. Spielplatz hopes to have an opening ceremony sometime in April. "It won't be long before kids will be shooting out of those tubes," she said. "It's going to be a lot of fun!" Ms. Spielplatz was asked if she plans on trying out the slide herself. "Are you crazy?" she said with a laugh. "A person could get killed on that thing!"

    1. You'd have to check with the Bay Head Recreation department to get an exact number, but I believe it will cost just under $2 million.
