Point Beach Vegan Restaurant Sued for $1.7 Million

If you believe that the customer is always right, then you might understand why Bay Head resident Tom Ayto is so upset. Mr. Ayto is a strict vegan so he was anxious to try the new vegan restaurant in Point Beach called "Burgers and Dogs Without Cows and Hogs." The fledgling franchise promises customers the best vegan hamburgers and hot dogs they've ever eaten. Mr. Ayto disagreed, however, finding it to be a horrifying dining experience. It was so disturbing to him that he is now suing the franchise for $1.7 million.

Owner of the Point Beach "Burgers and Dogs Without Cows and Hogs" franchise, Tom Otto, finds the whole lawsuit ridiculous. "We serve quality food here," said Mr. Otto, "and we stand behind our slogan that we have the best vegan burgers and hot dogs you've ever eaten. It's because our products are grass and corn fed."

The concept of grass and corn fed soy products may sound bizarre, but the "Burgers and Dogs Without Cows and Hogs" website explains:

Our proprietary method of raising soy is what makes our burgers and dogs taste like the real things. We looked at the best beef products and found that they came from grass-fed cows. Similarly, the best pork came from corn-fed pigs. It occurred to us that if we made a fertilizer for our soybeans that consisted of grass and corn, it would mean that our soy products would literally be grass and corn fed! The result is the best tasting soy-based meat substitute ever created!

In this case, it seems that maybe "Burgers and Dogs Without Cows and Hogs" made their meat substitute's too authentic. The lawsuit stipulates that Mr. Tom Ayto was traumatized because the burger he ate tasted too much like actual meat. "My client has been a vegan for over 20 years," said attorney Ron McDonald of the law firm Berger, Unyuns and Chiez who are representing Mr. Ayto. "He made the choice to give up meat and all its deliciousness, so the last thing he expected was to be reminded of how amazing a good burger can really be. He had become used to all meat substitutes having some degree of weird aftertaste, or just overall odd flavor. But the meat substitute he ate at 'Burgers and Dogs Without Cows and Hogs' was so authentic, he felt he had eaten the real thing! Now he cannot stop craving real meat! It's been a devastating experience."

Franchise owner Tom Otto isn't too worried about the lawsuit. "I think we're the first restaurant to ever be sued because our food was too delicious. I don't think that's a crime."

Attorney Ron McDonald said we would have to wait and see. "People disagree a lot in this case about who is right. Some say Tom Ayto, some say Tom Otto. But I know that my client has suffered as a result of his visit to this restaurant and he deserves compensation."

No court date has been set for the lawsuit. In the meantime, news of the suit has increased revenue for "Burgers and Dogs Without Cows and Hogs" by 38% as people realize that they must have some pretty good fake meat.
