Price Gouging for Eclipse Glasses Tops $500

Excitement has hit a fever pitch as everyone waits for the Moon to pass between the sun and Earth.  Although this actually happens every single month, today will be an eclipse, meaning we will be in the dark shadow of the moon for a little while. In the past, people might descend into madness as the day unexpectedly would turn to night. For us, the madness has come in the form of desperation to get protective glasses. People are reporting that eclipse glasses are selling for $500 or more.

Brielle resident, Lou Kinnup, says he paid $1800 for five pairs of protective glasses. "I wish I had gone to the library sooner when they were giving out free glasses, but I totally forgot," says Kinnup. "I didn't see that I had any choice. I didn't want my wife and kids and dog to miss this thrice in a lifetime event."

Officer Pat Youdown of the Brick Police Department advises everyone to avoid buying eclipse glasses from price gougers. "I advise everyone to avoid buying eclipse glasses from price gougers. You have no idea where those glasses come from or if they are safe. Instead, we recommend that individuals without protective eyewear put a bag over their head and hide in a closet until the danger has passed."

Point Beach resident, Luna Tick, who asked to remain anonymous, feels there is nothing wrong with selling eclipse glasses. "I had the good sense to order 100 pairs of glasses a while back. These are high quality eyewear from an unspecified Asian country that have been extensively tested on sightless moles. They are guaranteed to be nearly 100% effective when used at night. That's why I paid nearly $37 for the lot of 100."

Luna Tick says she has already made over $42K selling her eclipse glasses to friends, family and neighbors. "I only have 12 pairs left and if anyone is interested, they are $1000 each, or $10K for all 12. That's quite a bargain, if you ask me."

The Beacon would like to remind you to keep you and your family safe. Be sure to only use eclipse glasses from reputable sources. It's better to miss the eclipse than to risk harming your eyes.
